Woodlands Plantation Visit 3/22

Today we visited the Woodlands Plantation after our service at Woodlands Conservancy Park service. Woodlands plantation is a bed and breakfast preserved on the property of a real plantation back in the 1800’s. The property preserved an old cabin of where the slaves used to live, the family house and over watcher’s house. Foster the owner of the property also reserved an old church which he turned into a bar. Foster also provided a Crawfish boil which was fun to experience.

3/22 Nola Blog

Today we started our day off in the fields finishing our transect. We came across a heavy set of Blackberry and tree’s which was challenging to get through at first. Once we finished at the fields, we went to the Historic New Orleans Museum and viewed different time eras of artwork. After viewing the art, we meet Harry Shearer, creator of the documentary “The Big Uneasy”. Harry explained to us Americorp’s failure with the construction of the levees. Along with this Harry explained to us the corruption of politics as well and how this all came together to harm the New Orlean’s society. After speaking to Harry we visited Nola.com, Mike spoke to us about the wetlands environment and AmeriCorps participation in Katrina as well. After all Nola.com, we enjoyed our night watching a pianist at a joint a little out of downtown.

Today my group and I finished our first full complete transect. We finally picked up the hang of things and found an adequate efficient way to record our data. It was interesting to see the variety of plants and the locations where each landed. Before taking this course or doing this field research, I never knew how important these types of things mattered.

New Orleans 3/19

Today we finished the second part of our Cooking School. My group and I made Carrot Corrainder soup, which came out to our satisfaction. We also started on our research at Woodlands. As a non- ESRM student I was worried about missing up data or not being able to pick up the hang of things. In the end of the day my group the Swamp Monsters, got the hang of things.

Today we visited Woodlands Trail Park, we are expected to do most of our service here through restoring and collecting data with the native plants. After Hurricane Katrina the habitat had to be restored and is nowhere near as tall or full as it once was over a decade ago.

Trip Expectations

Before I embark on this experience to New Orleans I have thought a lot about what I expect to get out of this. For starters, my goal is to just make a difference within the environment and society. If I can help at least one person directly while I’m in New Orleans then that would bring an immense amount of joy to me. Another thing I want to do is to be able to see how different their niche is both from a sociological and environmental standpoint. I’m even curious how their ecosystem system is. I am not an ESRM student but I am excited to put myself in a different standpoint. Addendum, I am really intrigued to see how all the concepts we learned in class come to life when we attend this trip. It isn’t often that we (the students) get to take the information/concepts we are taught in these books and powerpoints while being able to apply them in a real life.
